On Monday August 23rd 2004 Janet Woodhead and a small group of enthusiastic embroiderers travelled from Staffordshire in the UK to the North East of Slovakia via Prague and Presov to a small town at the foot of the High Tatra Mountains called Stropkov.
Janet and the group then spent 5 weeks participating in the TICATEC (Training In Contemporary Applications of Traditional Europen Crafts! ) project, a European Commission scheme designed to accredit achievements and experience in Europe. The trip was organised by Grampus Heritage and Training Limited and the skills and techniques which the participants developed included weaving, macrame, crochet, bobbin lace with optional workshops in pottery and ceramics.
The group were ambassadors for Stafford College which is in Staffordshire UK and is where they are studying Machine Embroidery and Fine Arts. As guests in Slovakia they were based at a local school and experienced folk dancing, wine tasting and a range of other cultural visits.
